چکیده

We consider the problem of nding rigorous results for the dynamics of a classical charged point particle interacting with the electromagnetic eld, as described by the standard Maxwell{Lorentz equations. Some results are given for the corresponding linearized system, i.e. the so called dipole approximation, in the presence of a mechanical linear restoring force. We regularize the system by taking a form factor for the particle (Pauli{Fierz model) and study the limit of the particle's motion as the regularization is removed. We prove that (i) if the regularization is removed but mass is not renormalized the motion is trivial (i.e. the particle does not move at all); (ii) if the regularization is removed and mass is renormalized, the particle's motion corresponding to smooth initial data for the eld has a well deened nontrivial limit; (iii) in the case of vanishing initial eld the limit motion satisses exactly the Abraham{Lorentz{Dirac equation; (iv) for generic initial data the limit motion is runaway.

2 00 1 Classical electrodynamics of point charges Massimo Marino

A simple mathematical procedure is introduced which allows redefining in a precise way divergent integrals and limits that appear in the basic equations of classical electrodynamics with point charges. In this way all divergences are at once removed without affecting the locality and the relativistic covariance of the theory, and with no need for mass renormalization. The procedure provides fin...

Zero-point field induced mass vs. QED mass renormalization

Haisch and Rueda have recently proposed a model in which the inertia of charged particles is a consequence of their interaction with the electromagnetic zero-point field. This model is based on the observation that in an accelerated frame the momentum distribution of vacuum fluctuations is not isotropic. We analyze this issue through standard techniques of relativistic field theory, first by re...

M ar 2 00 6 Higher - Order Kinetic Term for Controlling Photon Mass in Off - Shell Electrodynamics

In relativistic classical and quantum mechanics with Poincare-invariant parameter, particle worldlines are traced out by the evolution of spacetime events. The formulation of a covariant canonical framework for the evolving events leads to a dynamical theory in which mass conservation is demoted from a priori constraint to the status of conserved Noether current for a certain class of interacti...

Connecting Blackbody Radiation, Relativity, and Discrete Charge in Classical Electrodynamics

It is suggested that an understanding of blackbody radiation within classical physics requires the presence of classical electromagnetic zero-point radiation, the restriction to relativistic (Coulomb) scattering systems, and the use of discrete charge. The contrasting scaling properties of nonrelativistic classical mechanics and classical electrodynamics are noted, and it is emphasized that the...
